Yamaha PSR e353 Keyboard

A digital keyboard is much like a digital piano but gives the user a lot more creative freedom. This is due to the various inbuilt voices and effects that can be turned on at a click of a button. While they are not usually appropriate for performing, some high-end companies who produce both digital pianos and keyboards, purposely design their keyboards so musicians have the option to perform with it if they wish adding extra portability to their product. You are also given the option to have an authentic feel or not with the different number of keys and various key actions that brands can make their keyboards with.

With keyboards not only do you have to consider the same things as you would a digital piano, but also extra things. This can make the shopping experience overwhelming, especially if you got to a piano shop to look for one. Here is a simple list of extra features that keyboards have to look out for.

  • Number of keys – This can range from 25 to a full 88 keys. If you are a beginner to the piano world then it is advised that you find a keyboard with more keys in order to really feel what it is like to move around a real piano sized keyboard.
  • Key action – If you want a keyboard with a piano feel then you will need either weighted or semi-weighted keys which adds resistance much like a traditional piano. A hammer action keyboard adds mechanical hammers to enhance the key’s response.
  • Portability – Portable keyboards are generally aimed towards beginner players but are often used by performers on the go. The sequencing is more basic than less portable ones to add lightness to the product. Many portable keyboards also feature a USB connector allowing you to connect to your computer to save/ edit projects and songs.
